The cottage is built right on the coast on the ruin of a netsman’s bothy. The view to the mountains of Eigg, Muck, Rum and the Cuillins of Skye is spectacular as are the green and turquoise waters of Fascadale bay.

The bay itself is stunning. Banks of rounded stones, cast up by countless storms, line the shore. At low tide a beach of pale sand is exposed, which gives the waters their colour. This is where the boats landed their catch, to be stored in the ice house, which remains to this day.

In summer you can watch the sun setting behind the islands and listen to the gentle swell of water – or in the winter months enjoy crashing waves, swirling spindrift and the crackle of the woodburning stove.

The cottage has two twin rooms and one double, all of which have en-suite bathrooms. The kitchen has cooker, microwave, washing machine and dishwasher and fridge-freezer.

The gatehouse was built in 1850. With its rounded turret and original stone walls it is full of character. As the name suggests the house guards the gateway to the castle and grounds. At the Eastern boundary of the estate only 10 minutes from Salen and the rode to Mallaig, it is an ideal base from which to explore the West coast.

The local coast is rugged and beautiful, otters are regularly seen in the bay and around the offshore islands. Next door is an RSPB nature reserve, and guided walks depart daily from the Glenmore Visitor Centre, which has an excellent café and stocks Sunart Suppers.

At the end of the day you might like to relax by the fire with a malt whisky – the offices of the Adelphi Distillery are in basement of the castle.

There are three bedrooms; one double and two twins.

Words don’t do this cottage justice, but the photos speak for themselves – it is very picturesque and has an incredible outlook to the islands of Eigg, Rum and Skye. This was originally the farmhouse for Achateny farm, with a tiny one-room bothy on the end where the shepherd lived.

Now the cottage has one double room, one twin and one room with bunk-beds, two bathrooms, and the kitchen has cooker, microwave, fridge with freezing compartment and washing machine and dishwasher.

In the evening watch the sun set from the sun porch while deer make their way to the coast to graze – you will find their hoofprints on the beach in the morning, alongside the tracks of otters and the prints of seasbirds. The white sand beach is only a short walk away, and is one of the most beautiful on the peninsula.
